Recess

​

Blind Spots- An area we can't immediately see, such as around a corner or behind a building. 

Centerpiece- Something the kids gather around, such as a playground, a soccer net, or a basketball court. 

Cluster- A group of kids. 

Clustering- The act of kids grouping. 

Frame- Invisible lines or a invisible area that kids cluster or play in. 

Framework of Influence- An area you oversee and guide. 

Organizational Engagement- Adult-to-student interactions with the intention of grouping, clustering, separating, managing energy, or making good use of a space. 

Reading Recess- Watching recess for the first few moments to see how kids cluster. 

Rising Emotions- Escalating energy that doesn't match the group's, forecasting a problem. 

Scanning- Actively viewing all areas. 

Suspicious Gathering- Students hovering over or around something.
 

 

Boundaries and Boundary-ish Terms

Boundary- A limit.

Intent- The meaning or emotional origin behind something.

Subjectivity- The perception of a situation. 

Interpretation- The conclusion about a situation that's reached after it's been processed. 

Gray Area- A situation where the answer, the intention, or the fault isn't clear. Arriving at an understanding usually involves a gut feeling and the outcome may involve a tradeoff. 

Nuance- A subtle, often hard-to-measure variance inside a subjective situation. 

Aggressive Accident- An incident where the outcome didn't match the purpose, but there was aggression involved. 

Violation- An act with the intentional purpose of infringing someone's physical, psychological, or emotional well-being.

Decision-Making/Knowing What to Prioritize- The ability to clearly choose one situation, scenario, or item over another. 

Focus- The ability to give attention to a singular item or situation. 

Detecting Patterns- The ability to see, identify, and make sense of recurring situations and behaviors. 

Emotion Regulation- The ability to understand and manage your emotions; the ability to present the emotion that will get the best long-term outcome for the situation. 

Being Confident/Having a Strong Presence- The belief you can achieve a task or a goal.

Using Body Language to Influence- The ability to nonverbally communicate; the ability to nonverbally communicate with the intention of directing or guiding a situation or behavior. 

Being Vulnerable- The ability to be open in a situation; the ability to lead with your core self with no emotional guards in place. 

Being Adaptable- The ability to adjust to a situation or circumstance, especially in the moment. 

Managing Distractions- The ability to dismiss lower-value tasks while moving towards higher-value tasks. 

Taking Initiative- The ability to move towards a high-value task on your own.
